Situated at an altitude of 1332 metres from sea level in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, the triangular shaped Bhimtal Lake is the largest lake in the region. This tourist destination, which is just 20 kms north of Kathgodam, is one of the best places to spend summer holidays. Bhimtal Lake is located in the famous Bhimtal town, the small headquarter of Nainital district.
Likewise Nainital, there are two corners of Bhimtal Lake, which are called Mallital and Tallital and both are connected together by the road. Besides a tourists destination, the Bhimtal lake is also a source of irrigation for the agriculture land of the adjoining area.
The biggest feature of the Bhimtal Lake is its picturesque natural beauty. The length of Bhimtal Lake is 1674 meters, width 427 meters and depth 30 meters. Adding to the beauty of lake, there is a small island over an area of 1.25 sq. kms in the middle of the lake, which has originated out of volcanic rocks. Tourists can enjoy the picnic on this island. Boats are always available there for taking tourists to the island.
There are two different opinions pertaining to the origin of its name. Some people believe that the lake has been named Bhimtal due to its vastness, where as some people associate it to Pandu’s son Bhim of Mahabharata. It is believed that Bhim had built this lake by digging the land here. The temple of Bhimeshwar Mahadev is also located here. Besides this, there are many beautiful tourist places around Bhimtal. At one end of Bhimtal Lake is Victoria Dam, which offers extremely beautiful scenic view. There is an aquarium on the island too. The legendary temple of the serpent deity is also there at Bhimtal, which is dedicated to Nag Kartotaka Maharaja, the king of Serpents.
How to reach
This tourist destination is not directly connected with the rail or air route. The nearest airport from here is 55 kms away at Pantnagar, which is linked to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The nearest railway station from Bhimtal is 20 kms away at Kathgodam. The Bhimtal road is directly linked to several major cities. A regular bus service is available for Bhimtal from Nainital, Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh. In addition, you can also reach Bhimtal from Rudraprayag, Kausani, Ranikhet and Uttarkashi.
