Gartang Gali of Nelong valley in Uttarkashi is amongst world’s deadliest skywalks

Opened for tourists after an interval of about 52 years, Gartang Gali in Nelong valley is located in Uttrakashi district of Uttrakhand. Though for safety reasons, foreign tourists are still not permitted in this valley. If you want to experience thrill in your life, it would not disappoint you.

The main attraction of this valley, Gartang Gali is also going to be opened very shortly. Gartang Gali has been listed amongst world’s deadliest sky ways. Situated at about 11000 feet above main sea level, this 105 m long wooden walk way bridge is likely to be developed on the similar pattern as of the Sky Walk of China.

This way embraces in itself the amazing and ancient heritage of India. It was closed during the Sino-India war in 1962. The Indian Army also used this unusual track till the construction of road from Bhairon valley to Nelong in 1975. Before 1962, this ancient wooden track used to be a trade route from Tibet and Afganistan to Uttrakashi for the woollen and leather textile merchants.

This valley remains under snow for about the whole year and there are too many scenic places with historical significance here. Being a beautiful cold desert alike Ladakh, there is hardly any vegetation in this place. One would come across the Tibetan plateau as well as the difficult pedestrian Indo-China trade routes in Nelong valley.

Two rivers including Ganga flows in this valley. According to most of the tourists who come here, this valley is a pure replication of Tibet and is believed to be more beautiful than Ladakh.

How to reach
The nearest airport from Nelong valley is Dehradun-based Jolly Grant airport, which is 200 kms from Uttarkashi. Where as the nearest railway station is 100 kms at Rishikesh from here. Besides this, you can also reach Haridwar and Dehradun by rail route. Bus and taxi are available for Uttarkashi from Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun. State transport buses run between these cities. One can use NH 58 to reach Uttarkashi from Delhi. One has to cover about 45 kms distance from Gangotri National park to reach Nelong valley.
