The Indian Government has recently promised their citizens that they will build a hill station in Jammu and Kashmir near an 18 km stretch between Zojila tunnel in Ladakh and Z-Morh tunnel of J&K. The announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for roads and transport in India through a press note.

Davos is a popular town in the Swiss Alps, famous for hosting the annual World Economic Forum meetings. The minister said that the hill station project could be a huge success story with public-private investment, and will certainly boost the economies of the two Union territories (J&K and Ladakh) by creating jobs.

Zojila Pass is situated at an altitude of 11,578 feet on the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh National Highway and remains closed during winters due to heavy snowfall. After completion the tunnel would reduce the travel time from 3 hours to 15 minutes with avalanche-free travel on the Srinagar-Leh section.

Project of construction has been given to Hydrabad’s company Megha Constructions. Total cost of the project is estimated to Rupees 8000 crores and 4429.83 has already been given to the company.

The Minister in his statement assured that the development work will not be done at the cost of hurting natural environment. He said that he will make sure to plant ten new plants for every single one that is cut during the work.

As per the reports, a meeting has also been scheduled in the coming days with the Lieutenant-Governors of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir union territories for taking land as equity. It is said that both Leh-Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir governments will be partners and stakeholders in the project.

Construction work on Zojila tunnel was started in October this year and design and planning of the hill station will be finalized with a Swiss architect. The project is likely to get completed by 2023 before next assembly elections in India.
