Situated about 8 kms from Almora in Uttrakhand, the Kasar Devi temple at Kashyap mountains belongs to second century. This temple is the major centre of faith for Hindus. Besides this, it is also quite popular as a picnic spot. It is believed that Swami Vivekananda who established the Ramakrishna Monastery and Ramakrishna Mission visited this place for meditation in the year 1890.
One can experience something mystic along with the beauty of nature here. According to locals, the Mother Durga had given her holy appearance here. In the temple, one of the eight forms of Mother Durga is worshipped as “goddess Katyayni”.
Pertaining to this religious site, a mythological tale is also quite prevalent. It is believed that about two thousand years ago, Mata Durga had incarnated in the form of goddess Katayayni and slaughtered 2 demons namely Shumbh-Nishumbh here. Since then this place has been a centre of faith for the devotees. It is said about Kasar Devi Temple that the Mother fulfils all the wishes of devotees who come here.
