Whenever one thinks about spending holidays in Himachal, the names of popular tourist destinations like Shimla or Kullu-Manali always strike one’s brain. However, the captivating beauty of this state is not limited to just few famous hill stations. Nahan in Himachal Pradesh is also such tourist place which is not so popular, but is worth seeing.
Surrounded by green forests and snow-clad mountain ranges, this city was founded in 1621 by Raja Karan Prakash. There is a castle named Nahan in this city. It is believed that Baba Banwari Das, the saint used to live with his companion Nahar at the particular place where this castle was built. Nahar means ‘ do not hit ‘ and probably this town has got its name from the word Nahar.
Located at an altitude of 932 meters above sea level, Nahan, the headquarter of Sirmaur district has several tourist destinations including Sambalvara Wildlife Sanctuary, Renuka Wildlife Park, Suketi Fossil Park, Trilokpur Temple, Dhaula Kuan, Renuka Lake and many more. Nahan has many forts, temples and lakes. Moreover, Nahan is also called the City of Ponds.
Located at about 40 kilometers away from Nahan, 672 meters long Renuka Lake is the most popular and largest lake of Himachal Pradesh. A large temple and water pond are situated at a place named Rani Tal in the centre of Nahan town, which is a beautiful picnic spot. Ducks and cranes enhance the beauty of this site manifold.
Religious sites like Jagannath temple, Renuka Temple and Trilokpur temple are also the major attractions of Nahan. Tourists can also enjoy trekking of about 15 to 40 km here. On this trekking route, tourists get the opportunity to see beautiful birds and animals. There are many ideal destinations for rock climbing as well here. One can visit Nahan during any season of the year.

The nearest airport from Nahan is located at Dehradun (121 kms) and Chandigarh (77 kms). The nearest railway station from Nahan is located at Barara (56 kms), Yamuna Nagar (65 kms), Ambala (59 kms) and Chandigarh (78 kms). Tourists can easily reach Nahan by road route. Nahan is accessible by bus from cities like Shimla, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Delhi and Haridwar.
