Shimla gets its first snowfall of the season before New Years eve

Last week of December 2020 came with excitement and much needed chill for the tourists who are planning to visit Shimla as the district finally received its first snowfall of the season just a few days before the new year’s eve. 

According to the Meteorological department in Shimla, the hill station will have rain and snow in the coming days as well. The regions which have been predicted to receive the light snowfall are Shimla, Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Kangra and Chamba, said the director of the MeT centre in Shimla during a press interview.

The MeT department has also predicted thick snow cover and cold waves in the lower hilly areas from December 29 to 31 which might affect the seasonal crops of the farmers. However, those in the tourism business are hopeful that the weather will attract more tourists for the New year Celebration.

As per the information, Kufri region which is just 14 kilometers away from Shimla received the highest snowfall of nearly 30cm while Dalhousie been at 22cm followed by Manali 14cm, Shimla 9cm, Jubbar Hatti 4cm and Khadrala Khada Pathar and Sungri at 7cm snow each. Apart from these Narkanda and Rohru recorded 2cm snowfall each.

Meanwhile Palampur received 16mm of rain along with Nahan (14.6mm), Solan (13.8mm), Bilaspur (13.5mm), Chamba (13mm), Kangra (12.8mm), Una (9.8mm), Mandi (8.4mm) and Dharamshala (2.6mm). 

Due to the change in weather some of the roads in the hilly region also remained affected. Roads including those leading to Kharapathar, Narkanda, Fagu, Khidki and Chambi were even blocked by the traffic police on Sunday. The Shimla cops also issued a statuary warning for tourists planning to visit Shimla via Dhalli, Mashobra, Sanjauli, Lakkar Bazar, Navbahar and Chhota Shimla saying that the roads are slippery.

Similarly, a dozen other roads in Chopal region also were blocked due to weather. Even as the Atal tunnel on NH 305 was also blocked due to fresh snowfall in Jhalori pass and Solang valley. The police advisory has asked people to avoid these roads for travel. The plains however received sunlight and very little rainfall and windy weather. 

From last Sunday, Shimla has been recording its minimum temperature at minus 1.1 degree Celsius while Kufri reached -2.4 degree Celsius. Others including Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie recorded their lowest at 0.2, 1.4 and -3.4 degree Celsius respectively.

Minimum temperature in Una was recorded at 2.8 degree Celsius, 0.7 degree Celsius in Solan, 3 degree Celsius in Bilaspur, 2.8 degree Celsius in Hamirpur, 7.9 degree Celsius in Nahan, 3.2 degree Celsius in Mandi and minus 3.1 degree Celsius in Kalpa, Kinnaur district. Keylong, the headquarters of tribal district Lahaul and Spiti, however remained the coldest place in the state with a minimum temperature of -6.7 degree Celsius.
